It Took Four Shootouts But Finally The Liberty
Flames Soccer Girls Win Their Tournament

By Kyrsie Drake

We had to have four shootouts to win our game but we finally did!
I play on the Liberty Flames Soccer Team and we won the Silverbacks Tournament in Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville on August 23.
It was a scary tournament because I had to play keeper the whole tournament and we had a lot of shootouts which meant I had to
keep the ball from getting into the goal.
There are four other girls from Sharon Elementary School on our soccer team.  Mary Kate McLean, Macy Linder, Ashlyn Richards, and
I are part of this team.
Our first game was easy because the other team just didn’t show up.  So the tournament officials had to find a team for us to play in a
scrimmage game.  They found a team for us to play against but it had boys on it!
Oh well we all figured we can beat them anyway.  It was hard and we were worn out by the end of the game.  That game didn’t count
for us because it was just a scrimmage but we played as hard as we could anyway.  We won!
The second game was for real and it was even harder.  The other team had a player who had a strong, fast kick and it was hard to
defend against her.  I play the keeper position (that’s goalkeeper) and I was moving around a lot to try and defend against her.
We almost lost but we came back and tied at the very last second.
We were going to play in the finals the next day.
Well at least we didn’t lose.  We were just glad the first day of our tournament was over.  We had beat the boys team and we had tied
the second team which had that fast girl playing.
The next day at first we were all excited because we knew we could win the first game.  That game was against a good team but it
was easy to beat them.  We had no problems winning that first game but we knew the second game was going to be harder.  It was
against a great team.
We were all a little scared.
That’s when it got really exciting.  We had to have a lot of shootouts to decide the winner.  Shootouts are like overtime.  They are
between the keepers (I was the keeper for my team) and the other team’s players.  They try to score a goal against the keeper.
I was freaking out!  It’s scary because it’s just you out there.  I had to keep my eye on the ball.  And they get five tries against me!
The first ball zipped by me fast.  They made it!  Oh no!  Four more to go!  Their second shot flew by me.  That’s two goals.  Three more
to go!  I was really freaking out now!
Then they missed their last three shots.  Whew!  That means they scored 2 out of 5 goals.
Now it was our team’s turn.  Our first shot was easy.  Our second shot was also easy.  That’s the one I scored.  But then we missed
our third, fourth, and fifth shot.
You know what that means?
IT’S A TIE!
And we had to have another shootout!
This one was just between one person and the keeper.  First the other team.  They missed!  Then it was our team’s turn.  We missed!
You know what that means?
IT’S ANOTHER TIE!
And we had to have another shootout!
We went back to the same 5 people that did the first shootout.  But this time we took turns so that one person kicks from their team
then one of our players got to try.
The other team went first.  They made it!  We were all holding our breaths.  Then our player kicked.  She scored!
IT’S ANOTHER TIE!
So their second player came out to kick.  She missed!  We were really excited and nervous.  Our second player, May-May, came out.
She kicked.  She missed!
IT’S ANOTHER TIE!
So it was time for their third person to come out and kick.  She missed!  We knew we could win the game right here.
Our player kicked.  She made it!  She actually made the goal!  We won!  Lindsay Wolf was the player who scored the winning goal.
No more ties!  No more shootouts!  We won!
So that is how we won our tournament.  It took lots of shootouts and we were nervous and scared and excited, but we won!
